The Tragic Tale of Dewayne and Big Agriculture’s Greed: How the World was Starved
Dewayne Pearce was an ambitious young farmhand from Montana, striving to make something of his life amidst an unforgiving and often cruel world. Though he lacked money or clout, Dewayne possessed one thing he cherished above all else – a passionate dream of becoming a successful farmer, capable of providing for himself and his family.
For years, Dewayne worked tirelessly on his small piece of farmland, striving to make something of it. But his small plot of land was no match for the powerful forces of big agriculture, which held a monopoly on the market. No matter how hard he worked, his crops returned little yield, while the greedy corporate farms next door returned bountiful harvests.
Time after time, Dewayne was forced to accept smaller and smaller profits, while his demands of a fair price were ignored. Refusing to accept his plight, he wrote letters to the politicians, pleading for justice. But the architects of the land were deaf to his cries, and instead chose to ignore him, later deleting his pleas for help from the record.
Little did Dewayne know that this same greed was slowly depleting resources across the world. The very same corporations that provided for his neighbors were cutting down forests, overusing natural resources, and depleting soils of their nutrients. Everything that made farm life so precious to him – the land, the wildlife, the family farms -were all disappearing before his very eyes.
Dewayne’s dream quickly withered, seemingly beyond his reach. He could not compete with the corporations, and yet he refused to accept defeat. He stood for something he believed in – the values of fairness and hard work he had been raised with. But the corporate forces were too powerful.
Within a decade of Dewayne’s dreams, the world had been left in shambles, and resources had been stripped from the ground. All of Dewayne’s effort and hope meant nothing in the face of the global famine that followed.
Dewayne was among the first to starve to death, a victim of his own naivete and the greed of big agriculture. He will never be remembered, in the end, but his tragic story will whisper on for all eternity. We must never forget the lessons of Dewayne, nor the consequences of allowing big agriculture to tear up and devalue the land. It’s time we make a stand and put an end to corporate greed before it’s too late!
