We live in a world infiltrated with corporate influence, shaping our lives in ways we may never be aware of. Consumers are unaware of the manipulation occurring in our food system every single day, and that should be a cause for concern. I’m here to tell you that some of our most beloved favorites, from potato chips to chocolate chips, may be a lot scummier than they seem.
Manufacturers of these snack staples are using a combination of secrecy and manipulation to control our cravings, luring us to their products with unhealthy additives and hidden chemicals. Recent studies have indicated that many chip brands are secretly adding artificial flavors, dyes, and preservatives to their products with no indication to the buyer. These chemicals have been linked to a variety of ailments, from sudden weight gain to migraines and even cancer, opening up the potential for public health risks.
The truth is that manufacturers don’t want consumers to be aware of their techniques, because if we knew what was lurking in our snacks, our love and loyalty to them would instantly disappear. So, they mask the truth behind clever marketing schemes and powerful corporate influence, hoping that we’ll never uncover the hidden ingredients in our food supply.
What’s worse is that even if you believe yourself to be a savvy consumer, you cannot always trust that the ingredients listed on the nutritional labels are accurate. Too often, companies doctor their labels to downplay the chemicals or sugar content in their snacks, creating a false sense of security when it comes to buying them.
We have to be smart about the products we are consuming. Be aware of hidden ingredients, and watch out for ingredients you can’t pronounce. If possible, search out smaller, local companies that source healthy ingredients and offer products that don’t contain hidden or unnatural substances. Our health depends on it.
